Modified Barium Swallow

Modified Barium Swallow

A barium swallow study involves swallowing liquids of different consistencies and observing through images to see if the liquid goes where it is suppose to.

When there are swallowing problems that may cause aspiration, and lead to problems such as aspiration pneumonia, a physician may order a swallow study. This study involves swallowing liquids of different consistencies and observing through images to see if the liquid goes where it is suppose to, or whether it goes down the windpipe.

These studies are interpreted by Speech Therapists on inpatients and outpatients at Wilkes Regional Medical Center, and recommendations are made for safe swallowing based on these studies.

To schedule a Swallow Study you must first obtain a physicians order, and then call 336-903-7862.
