Wilkes Regional Medical Center (WRMC) has been recognized as one of the top performers in the country on key quality issues for 2011. The Joint Commission honored the hospital for excellence in treatment of pneumonia, heart failure and surgical care, placing Wilkes Regional in the top 18 percent of hospitals in the nation.

The Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies more than 19,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization's commitment to meeting certain performance standards. This is the second year that The Joint Commission is recognizing accredited hospitals that attain and sustain excellence in accountability measure performance. As a top performer on key quality measures, Wilkes is among 620 hospitals in the United States being recognized for 2011. This represents the top 18 percent of Joint Commission accredited hospitals reporting core measure performance data for 2011. The number of hospitals achieving this recognition has increased since commission officials reported the first Top Performers last fall. Last year, 405 hospitals were recognized, representing the top 14 percent of Joint Commission accredited hospitals. The awards were published in the commission's "Improving America's Hospitals" annual report.

"Being selected as one of the top performing hospitals in the nation for the delivery of care is certainly an honor," said J. Gene Faile, the president and chief executive officer of WRMC. "This award by The Joint Commission validates the deep commitment of our physicians, nursing staff, support staff, and entire Wilkes Regional team to the delivery of excellent patient care." Top-performing hospitals met at least two 95 percent performance thresholds. First, they achieved performance of 95 percent or above on the composite score that includes all the accountability measures for which data are reported to The Joint Commission. WRMC achieved three 95 percent performance threshold areas: heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care. Second, recognized hospitals met or exceeded a 95 percent performance target for each and every accountability measure for which they report data. The Top Performers on Key Quality Measures program supports and provides an incentive for organizations to continually improve. WRMC is owned by the Town of North Wilkesboro and leased to the WRMC Hospital Operating Corporation. The hospital is managed for the operating board by Carolinas Health Care Systems.
