Wilkes Regional Medical Center again hosted Camp Med in June. Each summer for the past six years, Wilkes Regional has participated in helping high school students learn about health care careers. Twenty students from the county high schools are chosen to attend the week long day camp. Students receive information about Camp Med from their Guidance Counselor and must complete an application to attend. The students come to WRMC two days during that week to hear speakers from different hospital departments and also job shadow in departments of their interest. They receive a tour of the hospital, Out Patient Rehab, and the Diagnostic Center. Human Resource staff share what is expected when an employee is hired for the hospital. The students apply to attend through the Wilkes County School System and the program at WRMC is coordinated by Educational Services.

The Northwest Area Health Education Center website information states "The Camp Med Summer Program is co-sponsored by the Northwest Area Health Education Center (AHEC) of Wake Forest School of Medicine, Wilkes County Schools, and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. The program is designed to recruit, educate, and prepare high school students for careers in the health professions. Activities include 20-25 contact hours of presentation, tours-observations and clinical experiences."

The programs aim is to identify 20 ninth through twelfth grade high school students who have an interest in a health career and academic potential for a career in the health sciences. The goal of Camp Med is to identify a diverse group of students interested in health careers.

Be a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior for the upcoming school year. Complete the application process and meet Camp Med Summer Program Guidelines. Have a minimum of 2.5 grade point average.
